Opera celebrated at Guildhall
The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress together with internationally acclaimed Garsington Opera hosted a thrilling evening of operatic entertainment and fine dining at magnificent Guildhall on Tuesday 16 July 2019. A shortened version of Mozart’s Don Giovanni was presented and sung between dinner courses by the understudies for each role, who are remarkably talented members of Garsington Opera’s Alvarez Young Artists Programme.
The evening started with a short performance by local school students as part of the Lord Mayor & Garsington’s outreach programme. The programme has provided 240 London secondary school students aged 11 to 16 with the exciting opportunity to work with Garsington’s professional creative team of world-class directors, composers and singers to explore Mozart’s opera in more detail. Students interpreted the opera by devising their own words, composing their own songs and designing the set and costumes. They shared their extraordinary work fusing rap, YouTube and opera to invited guests during the afternoon of 16 July.
A huge thank to our participating schools: City of London Academy Highbury Grove, Drapers’ Academy, Hammersmith Academy, Prendergast School, Prendergast Ladywell School and Westminster City School. Grateful thanks also to RBH Properties and the whole team at Garsington Opera for an incredible day and evening of opera.
