Alan Wells QFSM tells us why Abseil Challenge is top
To mark our upcoming Abseil Challenge on 4 July, we spoke to long-term Abseil Challenge devotee and octogenarian Alan Wells QFSM.
The former firefighter and Past Master of The Worshipful Company of Firefighters told us about his love of exhilarating experiences and why he’s taking on the challenge for a 5th time…
What made you first take part in the Abseil Challenge?
I first undertook the Abseil Challenge in 2017 and this will be my 5th descent. I’m up for a physical challenge if I think it’s within my capability. The reward of success is satisfying. Even more if others benefit from what I’ve achieve.
What has been the highlight in taking part in the Abseil Challenge?
An opportunity to add another exhilarating experience to my life, help others in doing so and promote The Worshipful Company of Firefighters.
What would you say to potential abseilers this year on the fence about taking part?
There is no need to worry, but if you are apprehensive about coping with it physically and psychologically, seek out a club or specialist trainer who teaches rope access and literally ‘learn the ropes’ and basics of the technique.
If that feels good, go for the big one with The Lord Mayor’s Appeal!
On the day, follow and remember instructions. Have faith and confidence in the equipment and people managing the descents. Put yourself entirely in their hands and do as you are told.
There’s no need to question. At the descent launch point, you are not on your own. You’re clipped to an instructor who is on an adjacent set of ropes. He or she controls the descent.
Literally lay back because it’s the safest way and what the technique requires. Follow instructions, enjoy it and appreciate the sense of relief when your feet touch the ground!
