The Lord Mayor's Cup gathers 30 City companies

The Lord Mayor of the City of London Alderman Alastair King DL hosted The Lord Mayor’s Cup in June, a one-day 5-a-side mixed charity football tournament, for 30 City companies.

The inaugural cup took place at Powerleague Shoreditch where teams including The Leathersellers' Company, DLA Piper, KPMG, Aon, Baker McKenzie and Standard Chartered battled it out to become the ultimate champion and helped to raise almost £100,000 for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

A talented squad from the London office of international law firm Simmons & Simmons LLP beat the JP Morgan entries to claim the coveted Lord Mayor’s Cup trophy in a thrilling final. Also close to the top spot, were UK investment bank Peel Hunt.

Other teams included The City of London Corporation led by Town Clerk Ian Thomas and CityAM. While unable to make the day himself, The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also gathered a team to take part called MOFAB – ‘Mayor’s Office for Absolute Ballers’.

An avid football fan, Lord Mayor Alderman Alastair King DL donned his own footie kit to take part in the tournament. His team ‘The Lord Mayor’s All Stars’ which included his wife the Lady Mayoress Florence King, made valiant effort in the first round.

Lord Mayor Alderman Alastair King DL said:

“We were thrilled to welcome companies from across the City to join our inaugural The Lord Mayor’s Cup. A huge thanks to those that took part to raise vital funds for The Lord Mayor’s Appeal partner charities Homewards and MQ Mental Health Research, working to end homelessness and to pioneer research to transform mental health respectively. We hope the day offered everyone a chance to connect, compete and contribute to causes that truly matter. The success of the day highlights what can be done when we gather as a community to make a difference.”
