City Giving Day talks Tour de City with AON

As City Giving Day approaches, we chat to Wayne Greet, Reinsurance Broker at AON about one of its most popular events, Tour de City - and why companies should get involved this September…

Tell us about your Tour de City experience at City Giving Day 2024?

Having been part of City Giving Day for years, we found out that AON hadn’t been represented in Tour de City. So I went around the office and pulled together a few willing victims and four of us took part for the first time ever.

We were not all keen cyclists, so it was a challenge. 8 minutes on the static bike feels like a long time when you’re feeling the burn after 4 minutes!

It’s also a whole lot of fun. The support, the cheering, the music - it has a really good feel to it. We’re definitely taking part again this year.

What was the best thing about taking part last year?

Well our intention was not to finish last, so getting second place was an amazing surprise. The rest of the team were much younger than me, so I did bring the average age up a bit. Maybe that’s why we were second and not first!

Really the best thing was that Tour de City brings people together. Our AON team was made up of colleagues I don’t usually get to work with, so it was wonderful to chat and spend time with them.

After the event, we ended up talking about it for months after because we'd done something fun together for a good cause.

What would you say to companies thinking about taking part in Tour de City this year?

Do it. This is a brilliant event because it's in the city, it doesn't take up a great deal of time and anybody from your team can do it. The Lord Mayor’s Appeal team makes it very easy and you get to spend the day or a few hours with colleagues out of the office. Just remember, you’ve got to hassle everyone afterwards to donate!
