The Lord Mayor’s Grand Finale raises thousands in comedy-filled farewell

The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor, Alderman Alastair King DL, brought his mayoral year to a close with a night of laughter and philanthropy at 'The Grand Finale: The Lord Mayor’s Last Laugh' event, held at the historic Guildhall on Wednesday 5 November 2025. 

More than 375 guests attended the black-tie event, which combined entertainment, fine dining and fundraising in support of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal and its two charity partners Homewards, a programme of The Royal Foundation working to end homelessness, and MQ Mental Health Research, the UK’s leading mental health research charity. 

Guests were welcomed with a sparkling wine reception, generously provided by Nyetimber, before enjoying an evening of comic entertainment and delectable dining.   

Dead Ringers star Lewis MacLeod kicked off the evenings’ hilarity with a special appearance from ‘Donald Trump’, while composer James McConnel delivered a bespoke musical tribute to the Lord Mayor.  

The evening was headlined by Alexander Armstrong, the much-loved television presenter. Armstrong delighted the audience with a special “Have I Got Lord Mayor’s News For You” segment, tailored to the occasion. He was joined by actor and writer Poppy Scales, who delivered a witty and well-received set, while broadcaster and restaurant critic William Sitwell took on the role of Master of Ceremonies with his trademark charm and humour.  The night concluded with a lively sing-along to “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life” which had guests out of their seats and singing along, 

Throughout the evening guests took part in the various fundraising activities which included a raffle, a live and silent auction all to raise money for The Lord Mayor’s AppealThe total amount raised was a phenomenal £210,000. 

Reflecting on the year, the Lord Mayor thanked guests and supporters for their generosity throughout his termThe Lord Mayor’s Last Laugh served as the final fundraising event of Alderman King’s mayoralty, closing his year in office on a high note of humour, celebration and community spirit.
