Power of Inclusion: Unspoken Rules of the City webinar recap

We are excited to share the recording of last week’s Power of Inclusion webinar uncovering the unspoken rules of the City.

Charlotte Biddle, Senior Global Benefits Captive Consultant at our corporate partner, Aon, chaired an engaging conversation touching on personal experiences of barriers to accessing information that helps to navigate your career as well as practical steps employers can take to broaden access and support more equitable career progression.

Thank you to our panellists:

  • Nicole Williams, Counsel and Head of Impact Investment Products – Ashurst LLP
  • Sarah Guerra, Equalities Director, City of London Corporation
  • Zoe Garshong, Founder & Director, Ms Independent Careers
  • Nishant Das, Executive Director, Infrastructure & Project Finance, UK & Europe, Standard Chartered Bank

Opening the conversation, the panellists each shared an example of an unspoken rule of the City that had shaped their early career or perspective.

Their reflections spanned a wide range of experiences, from navigating unfamiliar culinary experiences, to managing the expectations and hidden costs of after-work socialising, to feeling excluded from the cultural knowledge and informal conversations that take place in both canteen spaces and client settings.

The conversation went on to explore the role of senior leaders versus individuals in navigating information gaps, allyship as a necessary focus to bridge gaps in social capital, the role of networks/ employee resource groups, and the specific unspoken rules many young women face in their career.

We look forward to continuing this conversation throughout 2026 as we break down barriers to entering City careers.
