The Lord Mayor’s Appeal appoints David Johnston OBE as Chief Executive

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal has announced the appointment of David Johnston OBE as its new Chief Executive.

Bringing significant experience across the charity, education and public policy sectors, David has dedicated much of his career to improving opportunities for young people. As Chief Executive of the Social Mobility Foundation for more than a decade, he grew the organisation from a small team into a national charity, supporting thousands of young people from low-income backgrounds through education and into employment.

David has previously served as the Director of Future, a charity giving grants and advice to organisations working with young people, and Coordinator of the Oxford Access Scheme, which targeted inner city areas to widen access to higher education. During his time as MP for Wantage (2019-2024) he also served as Minister for Children, Families and Wellbeing (2023-2024). He is currently Chair of Trustees for the Great Friendship Project, Chair of Governors at Ark Acton Academy and Chair of Parentkind's Advisory Board.

In recognition of his contribution to social mobility, he was awarded an OBE in 2018.

He says:

“I’m honoured to be joining The Lord Mayor’s Appeal at such an important moment. The Appeal plays a unique role in bringing together the leadership, businesses and communities of the City to help those who need it most. I look forward to working with our partners and supporters to deliver a new strategy and ensure that the generosity of the City translates into meaningful, measurable impact.”

As Chief Executive, David will lead The Lord Mayor’s Appeal team in its aim to galvanise City leaders, businesses, livery companies, schools and charities and use its platform as a catalyst for change. Championing a City that cares through programmes and partnerships that focus on breaking down barriers, unlocking potential and creating career opportunities.

Sir Edward Braham, Chair of Trustees of The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, said:

“We are delighted to welcome David as Chief Executive. His deep commitment to social mobility and his experience of leading impactful charities make him exceptionally well placed to guide The Appeal into its next chapter. The trustees were particularly impressed by David’s focus on measurable outcomes, strong governance and responsible stewardship of donor support. These values are central to The Lord Mayor’s Appeal and to ensuring that the generosity of our supporters delivers lasting change.”
