The Lady Mayor's Ride Out Reimagines a City Tradition

Around 120 motorcyclists took to the streets of London this July for the first-ever Lady Mayor's Ride Out, sponsored by Triumph Motorcycles.

Replacing the long-standing tradition of a horseback ride with a posse of motorcycles, the Ride Out embodied the Lady Mayor’s theme of 'Unsquaring the Square Mile'—bringing a modern perspective to one of the City's ceremonial traditions.

The day began beneath the iconic dome of St Paul's Cathedral, where riders from London and beyond gathered before setting off under the escort of the City of London Police. Led by the Lady Mayor, alongside Triumph UK Ambassadors Sallyha Din and Deimante, and the Lady Mayor riding pillion with Emma Franklin, Chief Editor of Motorcycle News, the convoy of around 120 motorcycles created an eye-catching sight as it made its way down Cannon Street and out of London onto the Essex countryside.

Concluding at Cherry Orchard Farm in Essex, riders came together for a celebratory BBQ reception in support with the Lady Mayor and Mayoral Consort. Reflecting on the success of the day, Lady Mayor Dame Susan Langley said:

"Swapping the traditional ride out on horseback for a pack of motorcyclists was a bold decision and I'm thrilled we pulled it off in style. Thank you to the team at The Lord Mayor's Appeal for turning our idea into a spectacular reality and to Triumph Motorcycles who added that much-needed va va voom to the day. Events like this show just how un-square the Square Mile really is!"
