It's Number Confidence Week
The Lord Mayor's Appeal charity partner National Numeracy celebrate their annual Number Confidence Week from 4-8 November and this year the theme is 'numeracy for equality'.
As part of the Number Confidence and Social Mobility research report supported by The Appeal's funding, it was revealed that women display lower levels of confidence as compared to men, have more negative maths experiences at school than men, linked to lower levels of number confidence; and face more career challenges than men resulting from a lack of a maths qualification, particularly in terms of their earnings.
Here are some shocking stats from the study:
- Almost quarter of women – 24% said maths and numbers made them nervous, compared to 12% of men
-
40% of women said they don’t think they are a numbers person, compared to 23% of men
-
33% of women said if a job they were interested in listed "using numbers and data" as a requirement, it would put them off applying, compared to 20% of men
To help build awareness and drive change around this issue, National Numeracy will focus their yearly number condfidence campaign on closing the gender number confidence gap, ensuring inclusivity by talking about the barriers men face and about allyship and providing tools, information and resources that help adults and companies boost their number confidence.
These will be available from 4-8 November on all National Numeracy's digital channels.
