City Giving Day is good for your business

City Giving Day is a great opportunity to connect our community activities at the Bank with other organisations across the City, and recognises the impact we collectively make within our local community. Our colleagues take part in a broad range of fundraising and volunteering activities throughout the year with numerous charities they are passionate about. In addition we fundraise for two charities each year selected by colleagues. Over the years we have marked the day in different ways. We have used social media to highlight the range of volunteering activities that colleagues are involved with, including me as a school governor. We also use the day to announce our two new charities of the year. Last year’s City Giving Day was different as 2019 was a special anniversary for the Bank of England as we celebrated our 325th anniversary. There were many activities that took place during the year and on City Giving Day we celebrated our charity partnerships, welcoming the Lord Mayor to the Bank to play a round of our 325 BoE mini-golf game. The game had been developed by one of our Community Champions with our Apprentices as a fun way to fundraise for our charities and get colleagues involved.

My idea was to “putt charity” first for City Giving Day. Since the Bank of England was celebrating its 325th anniversary we created a putting platform which was 325 yards long. People donated to try and “putt” golf balls through the doors of a model of the Bank to score 325. We set up in one of the corridors of the Bank and laughter was soon heard when the Lord Mayor arrived with young people from one of the charities The Lord Mayor’s Appeal supports, OnSide Youth Zones. The next day within the wonderful surroundings of the Mansion House we hosted a charity quiz night attended by City banks and brokers. A competitive evening with TD Securities crowned as quiz champions but the real winners were the Bank’s and The Lord Mayor’s Appeal charities as we raised nearly £18k. City Giving Day gives us a chance to do the right thing “putting” charity first, plus it puts a smile on the faces of all those people taking part.
