Our We Can Be introductory morning is a great success

This month we welcomed City businesses to our We Can Be introductory morning. We Can Be is our unique programme designed to help young women in and around London learn about careers in The City while developing key career ready skills that they can start using straight away. 

Kindly hosted by our corporate partner, Bank of China, on 9th floor of their City office, guests were treated to panoramic views of the Square Mile along with a sneak peak into the benefits of joining We Can Be 2024. They heard from new and longstanding We Can Be participants on their experiences hosting the schools on the day – from watching young women grow in career confidence to the benefits for corporates in accessing young talent and fresh perspectives.

Georgie Hazell Kivell, Director of Marketing and Communications at Augmentum Fintech, who took part in We Can Be for the first time in 2023, was the first speaker and shared how she visited The City as a young girl with her father and was discouraged from going into banking.

She said;

“Years later and I was thrilled to be involved in We Can Be this year. We welcomed 15 young women to our office, introducing them to a range of team members and partners and sharing what investing in start-ups mean. It was amazing to see their eyes open and meet people in finance who look like them.”

Lucy Jones, Senior Marketing Manager at LGT Wealth Management and long-time We Can Be participant shared her top tips in hosting the young women – from creating engaging tasks that empower their future career choices to introducing them to role models so they can see themselves in The City to having a steady supply of cupcakes.

The third speaker was Phoebe Stone, Partner and Head of Sustainable Investing & Head of Intermediary Investment Services at LGT Wealth Management and LMA Trustee, who highlighting the many incentives for corporates in getting involved. She also spoke on how passionately she believed in mentoring young talent and attracting young people from all backgrounds to create a more inclusive and skilled City.

Finally, We Can Be Programme Manager Carla Emmanuel, led the audience through the We Can Be 2024 timeline - from upcoming workshops to our spring event inviting young women to spend a day in The City which gives businesses the opportunity there are to showcase the broad range of roles and industries the City of London has to offer.

In its 7th year, We Can Be is a fantastic opportunity for City businesses to showcase the broad range of roles and industries the City of London has to offer and the opportunities available to the young women from a range of backgrounds who visit for the day. Every year it opens the doors for almost 200 young women to City businesses, allowing them to experience life in a City office first hand.
