Social Mobility- Finding untapped talent

In Britain those who are born into disadvantage find it increasingly harder to progress. The Social Mobility Commission’s 2017 state of the nation report showed that only one in six of workers who were low paid in 2006 had managed to find a permanent route out of low pay a decade later. Countries with high social mobility have enjoyed a much higher economic growth rate over the past century than low-mobility economies. So what role does UK business have to play?
This breakfast will share success stories from organisations who have found ways to ensure recruits are attracted to roles, designed their recruitment pipeline to ensure talented individuals succeed, and highlighted role models to ensure everyone feels part of the family once they arrive - no matter what their background.

Hear from Kulbir Shergill, Senior Diversity & Inclusion Manager at Grant Thornton, about what they did to top the Social Mobility Index 2017 and how their new approach to recruitment has resulted in approximately 20% of the firm’s annual intake being people that would previously have been screened out. What’s more, internal research through their annual performance review process, demonstrates that those who would have been previously screened out due to academic requirements are performing better than those who would have passed the previous screening.
