Lord Mayor Elect rides through Square Mile in State Coach

Lord Mayor Elect Alderman William Russell, who becomes the 692nd Lord Mayor of the City of London on Friday 8 November, rides through the Square Mile in the office holder’s State Coach during a rehearsal run yesterday for Saturday’s Lord Mayor’s Show. The carriage – the world’s oldest ceremonial vehicle still in use – has been a part of every procession since 1757.

It's part of the rehearsal for this year's Lord Mayor's Show - which this year is 804 years old. It has been a fixture of London life for centuries, from its origins as a way to make the city behave through mediæval carnival and imperial spectacle to become the world’s greatest unrehearsed civic procession and its longest-running TV show. The Show takes place on Saturday 9 November from 11am. 

 Alderman William Russell of the Bread Street ward is the 692nd Lord Mayor of London will be He is Lord Mayor Elect until the day before the Show, Friday November, when he takes office in the Silent Ceremony.
