On Thursday 11 May the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress hosted the China Britain Dinner at Mansion House, celebrating the 45th anniversary of the restoration of full diplomatic relations between the UK and China and raising funds for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal. The event, organised in partnership with the China-Britain Business Council, was attended by HE Ambassador Liu Xiaoming and his wife Hu Pinghua as well as UK companies with links to China and Chinese companies with a base in the UK from various different sectors.
The event entailed a Champagne reception in the Salon followed by a 3-course dinner in the Egyptian Hall. Guests heard insightful speeches from The Rt Hon The Lord Mayor Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley, HE Ambassador Liu Xiaoming, Chairman of China Britain Business Council Lord Sassoon and from the Lady Mayoress Wendy Parmley. The evening also featured stunning performances by musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra in a special East-meets-West inspired programme of music introduced by Kathryn McDowell CBE, Managing Director of the London Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire, developed for a private concert in Beijing, was presented for the first time in London at this event.
Later on in the evening a lively fundraising auction was conducted by auctioneer Edward Rising with five fabulous lots and afterwards the MC for the evening John McLean OBE, Kathryn McDowell and LSO violinist Clare Duckworth put themselves forward for guests to sponsor them in their Abseil Challenge down The Leadenhall Building later on in the year in aid of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
The Lord Mayor’s Appeal would like to express our sincere thanks to China-Britain Business Council for all their support on the event, HSBC for sponsoring and everyone who donated prizes or attended the evening.
