The Lord Mayor’s Power of Diversity series launched its 4th year this morning, with the first breakfast in the 2017 series ‘How to get D&I right’.

Kindly hosted and sponsored by AllianzGI, the event saw the launch of the new 'Unleashing the Power of Diversity: Measurement, Motivation and Management' research undertaken by Cass Business School and Ashridge Executive Education and commissioned by CIMA, the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, and the City of London Corporation. 

The report seeks to find out why good diversity and inclusion strategies are not always being implemented in City firms. Fifteen leading City businesses were examined, along with considerations from a range of stakeholder groups. The report recommends a ‘3Ms’ approach to embedding diversity: measurement, motivation and management.

Approximately 70 D&I professionals and senior leaders from the City and City related companies joined The Lord Mayor, Alderman Dr Andrew Parmley at the event, who shared his thoughts on the topic by saying, "it's not about being invited to the party, but being asked to dance".

What the speakers said:

Dan Robertson, Diversity & Inclusion Director, enei chaired the event and opened the session by sharing a short film from Heineken, titled 'Open your World' to set the scene. We were delighted to have Lucy MacDonald, CIO Global Equities from AllianzGI to warmly welcome guests and outline the context of this increasingly important topic.

Regarded as experts on this subject, our speakers included:

  • Joanna Abeyie, Founder & Managing Director at Hyden

Speakers gave a critical insight into how vital inclusive leadership in an organisation is, and the need to focus on motivation, measurement and management. Joanna Abeyie also shared her own personal experience of how she faced and overcame several barriers for being considered different, and despite this has carved a successful career helping organisations to create inclusive cultures.

The session ended with a lively Q&A session between the audience and the panellists, followed by more networking. The seminar programme including biographies of the speakers can be found here.
