On Sunday 18 June, on one of the hottest days of the year, 17 teams of 4 drivers donned driving overalls and helmets to take part in the annual City Go Kart Grand Prix at the famous Daytona Circuit at Sandown Park. The event is organised by the Glovers’ Company in support of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.
Drivers, representing City Livery Companies, raced in an epic two hour endurance race on the 900m GP Circuit in pursuit of the winner’s trophy, which incorporated driver changes and pit-stops in a ‘Le Mans’ style format. The winning team was the team that completed the most laps within the allotted time.
The event was attended by the Lord Mayor and his team did their best to fend off challenges from the Sheriffs, various Aldermen, Liveries and Wards. In the end, the race was won by the Management Consultants Company with second place going to Barbers Company and third place to Young Freemen. The special toilet seat award for bad behaviour was won by the Chartered Accountants Company!
It was a fantastic day’s racing with great comradery between the teams. We look forward to a re-match next year!
