Back in April of this year, the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK (CCCUK) donated the first batch of medical supplies to The Lord Mayor’s Appeal, to be distributed throughout the NHS, to care homes, and beyond.
The donation consisted of 2 million items, donated by CCCUK member Bank of China, including 20 ventilators, 722,000 units of medical masks, 100,000 units of N95 masks, 19,000 sets of medical protective clothing, 19,000 sets of goggles, and 1 million pairs of medical latex gloves.
Thanks to logistical support from the British Embassy in Beijing and British Airways and Virgin, the donations from Bank of China, Beijing Financial district, Ping An and Costco shipping, were distributed to organisations across the country, including NHS, St Barts Hospital, Westminister Society, Hospice UK, Age UK and Carers Trust.
The personal protective equipment has been vital in the fight against COVID-19, and with supplies short, the proactive and swift response from the Chinese enterprises has been very welcome and had a profound impact on the experiences of those working on the frontline.
"The generosity and support from the Bank of China and Chinese businesses have provided much needed PPE which has enabled us to make a difference to the lives of those who are sick and vulnerable throughout the UK. Thank you to everybody who has given so generously to The Lord Mayor's Appeal," says John McLean, TLMA Board member and Head of UK/China relations.
