October is Black History Month, a celebration of the people who shape or have shaped our society, who are Black and have Black heritage. At The Lord Mayor’s Appeal our Power of Inclusion series celebrates diversity and inclusion in all forms – and this includes race. Our focus this year is on social mobility, and we know that there is a huge intersection between race and social mobility - those from ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to experience downward social mobility than their male or white counterparts.
That’s why we have asked people in the City their experiences of building a career as a Black person. What barriers have they faced? How can change come about? What is the role of allies? What structural shifts need to happen? And what are their hopes for the future? We will profile them on social media throughout October.
Because it really is an important conversation to be having.
